Hematocrit: What is it and why is it important?
Hematocrit - What is it and why is it important? Hematocrit (HCT) is an important value measured during a blood test, providing insight into the proportion of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the total volume of blood. It is expressed as a percentage and is a key indicator of a person’s health. Importance of hematocrit Hematocrit is an essential part of a complete blood count (CBC) and helps doctors identify various health conditions, including anemia, polycythemia (elevated red blood cell count), and other disorders. A low hematocrit value can indicate insufficient production of red blood cells, while a high value may point to dehydration or certain diseases like polycythemia. How is hematocrit measured? The microhematocrit method is based on the DIN 58 933 Part I standard and uses either EDTA or heparinized blood. A small amount of the sample is filled into glass capillary tubes and centrifuged. This process separates the blood components, with the packed red cells at the bottom and the plasma at the top. The hematocrit value is then read using a specialized measuring scale. A more commonly used method today is automated blood cell analysis, where the hematocrit is calculated indirectly based on red blood cell counts. The centrifugation technique serves as the reference method for calibrating and validating automated instruments. When is Hematocrit measurement necessary? Hematocrit measurement is often part of a routine blood test or used to diagnose and monitor diseases. It is particularly helpful when symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath are present, as it can help determine potential underlying causes. Social Media Presence We maintain a company profile on social networks and career platforms in order to increase our visibility among potential customers and interested parties and to make our company visible to the public. Social networks help us to increase our reach and actively promote interaction and communication with users. Activity and communication on social media play an important role in attracting new customers and employees. Social media and our website allow us to share relevant information about our company, publish events, and communicate important short-term announcements and job vacancies. They also help us to get in touch with users quickly and easily. Social media platform operators create so-called user profiles based on user behavior, such as the indication of interests (likes, shares). These are used to tailor advertisements to the interests of target groups. When users are active on social media channels, cookies or other technologies are regularly stored on their devices, sometimes regardless of whether they are registered users of the social network. Insights (statistics) The data evaluated by social media platform operators is provided to us in the form of anonymized statistics, which means that it no longer contains any personal data from users. Based on the statistics, we can see, for example, how often and at what time our social media profile was visited. Currently, fan page operators are unable to disable this feature. We therefore have no influence on the extent to which the data is processed by social media platforms. Social Media Messenger In connection with the use of social media, we may use the associated messengers to communicate with users in an uncomplicated manner. The security of individual services may depend on the user's account settings. Even in the case of end-to-end encryption, the social media platform operator can draw conclusions about whether and when users communicate with us. Location data may also be collected. Depending on where the social network is operated, user data may be processed outside the European Union or outside the European Economic Area. This may pose risks for users because it makes it more difficult for them to enforce their rights. Please consult the centrifuge manual or contact us for assistance. Simple determination of your centrifugation values For optimum use of your centrifuge, the RCF (relative centrifugal force) or RPM (revolutions per minute) must be set correctly. You can rely on our calculator to determine these values precisely so that you achieve the best possible results. Our easy-to-use converter simplifies the precise matching of the parameters to your centrifugation process. Calculation of RCF or RPM: Would you like to calculate the relative centrifugal force (RCF) or the rotational speed (RPM) quickly and easily? Using our calculator, you can obtain the corresponding value to the value you already have by simply entering the radius of your centrifuge rotor and the RPM or RCF value respectively. What do RCF and RPM mean? RCF (relative centrifugal force): this is the centrifugal force as a multiple of gravitational acceleration and is often referred to as the "centrifugal factor". RPM (revolutions per minute): this is the rotational speed of the rotor, expressed as the number of full rotations performed by the rotor in one minute. What is the rotor radius? The radius (r) is the distance between the rotor axis and the bottom of the centrifuge tube, measured in millimeters. You can find this information either in our radius look-up or in the operating instructions for your device. The rotor radius is also known as the centrifuge radius, centrifuging radius or rotation radius and is essential for precise calculation of RCF or RPM. Simple calculation for optimum results: our calculator effortlessly performs RCF and RPM calculations based on input of the rotor radius and the corresponding other value. Using the correct centrifugation parameters, you can be sure you will achieve precise results for your application. Disclaimer: Please refer to the operating instructions for your device or the manufacturer's guidelines for precise measurements of the rotor radius and the exact operating instructions. Why choose R290? Eco-Friendly R290, or natural propane, is an eco-friendly refrigerant with a GWP below 3, offering high efficiency and minimal climate impact, though its flammability requires careful handling. Supports compliance with current and future regulations. Energy efficient Devices are about 10% more energy efficient with R290 Reduces energy costs while maintaining high cooling performance Future proof Natural refrigerants are already used in many refrigerators, air conditioners, and heat pumps. We are following this future-proof trend. R290 does not require complex treatment (recycling) or disposal after use. Helps minimize environmental impact over the equipment's lifecycle. The R290 upgrade ensures your equipment is ready for the future while enhancing environmental and operational efficiency. What does GWP mean? GWP, or Global Warming Potential , measures how much heat a gas traps in the atmosphere over time compared to carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), which has a GWP of 1. The lower the GWP, the smaller the impact on global warming. The propane gas R290, with its exceptionally low GWP of 3, has a minimal effect on the environment. This makes it an excellent choice for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially compared to fluorinated refrigerants like R134A or R452A, which have much higher GWPs. Choosing R290 means supporting both sustainability and compliance with modern regulations. Why this upgrade matters Switching to the natural propane gas isn’t just about meeting regulations; it’s a step toward a more sustainable and cost-effective future. Improved energy efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint make your operations greener and more responsible. R290 for more efficient, eco-friendly, and future-ready cooling solutions. But what about Hettich's Refrigerated Centrifuges? According to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2729, Article 1, c), on fluorinated greenhouse gases, our centrifuges can be marketed and exported until 31.12.2028 , as long as they are used exclusively as defined in the regulation. Specifically, this applies to “laboratory centrifuges that separate liquids of different densities or liquids from solids in a rapidly rotating container.” We are actively working to incorporate R290 as alternative refrigerant, wherever possible. However, in sensitive areas, we need additional development time to ensure we meet our high performance and safety standards. As a result, we view the EU Commission's decision as a significant step forward for both our industry and medical research. For our refrigerated centrifuges, the transition to the natural refrigerant (R290) will take place in stages. The current development status is as follows: MIKRO 2.0 R, ROTANTA 460 Robotic The MIKRO 2.0 R and ROTANTA 460 Robotic centrifuges contain a hermetically sealed refrigeration system with the new refrigerant R290, with a global warming potential (GWP) below 3. MIKRO 200 R The MIKRO 200 R centrifuge contains a hermetically sealed refrigeration system with the refrigerant R134A with a global warming potential (GWP) above 150. All other refrigerated Centrifuges MIKRO 220 R, UNIVERSAL 320 R, ROTINA 380 R | RC Robotic, ROTINA 420 R, ROTANTA 460 R | RC | RF, ROTIXA 500 RS, ROTO SILENTA 630 RS, ZentriMix 380 R: These centrifuges contain a hermetically sealed refrigeration system with the refrigerant R452A with a global warming potential (GWP) above 150.
